EUROPEAN DEADHEAD SURVEY

Anyone interested in participating in a survey of deadheads in Europe, read on:

Hello

It’s 41 years since the invitation ‘Dead Freaks Unite’ appeared on the sleeve of the Skull and Roses album. This formalised the whole Deadhead phenomenon.

I live in the UK and have been a dedicated follower of the Dead since “Anthem of the Sun” and have seen them on each European tour.

A colleague and I have been invited to write an article about European Deadheads for a forthcoming edition of the academic journal “Popular Music and Society” dealing with themes relating to “fandom”. To help us to understand the band’s continuing importance to its European fanbase, we will very shortly be issuing a questionnaire. Initially, this will seek to gather basic information from respondents, such as age, gender, occupation, number of shows attended, etc. More importantly, we would also want to explore the overall significance of the Grateful Dead to its followers – the ‘meaning’ of the band (and its music); the place it occupies in the lives of Deadheads; the opportunities and constraints that come with Deadhead activity; the benefits to be derived. These responses will provide much of the material for the article.

Respondents will not be identified by name, and anonymity and confidentiality will be guaranteed. We would also hope, where possible, to interview a representative selection of Deadheads about their experiences.

The article will be published in late 2012/early 2013.

If you would like to receive the questionnaire and/or would be willing to be interviewed (in person or by telephone) please e-mail me at pandagos@yahoo.com .If you have any questions, please contact me at the same e-mail address.

And please do forward this to others who might wish to participate!

Best wishes,

Pete Smith

JAM IN THE DAM ANNOUNCES THEME NIGHTS

In keeping with the trend at other intimate festivals and jamband excursions, Jam In The Dam has annouced themes for each of the nights of the festival. It starts off on Wednesday, March 14th with "70's Night" (The 10 years between the 60's and the 80's. Thursday, March 15th is "Inside Out" (You'll be well on your way by day 2) and the festival finishes up on Friday, March 16th with "Be Green" (Whatever that means to you ...). So get your costumes ready!

“Pre Jam in the Dam” Party with Cosmic Finger

Already have your flights booked for Jam In the Dam? If not, you will want to get them soon while there are still cheap flights available (although with the massive Schiphol Airport being one of the busiest in Europe, it shouldn’t be hard to get a flight connecting from somewhere), - and most importantly, you will want to make sure you arrive in Amsterdam at least a day early...

German Grateful Dead tribute band “Cosmic Finger” will once again be hosting a completely unofficial “Pre Jam In The Dam Party” on Tuesday, March 13th at the “Maloe Melo Club” in Amsterdam, with support from acoustic instrumental guitarist Jeff Aug.

The “Maloe Melo Club” is a small family run “Blues Cafe” right on the main canal (it’s actually on the same street as the Milky Way, just way at the other end) offering live music seven days a week. It is not a coffee shop, it is a Cafe-Bar (and yes, there is a distinction) with a music room in the back, but if you show up early you can always drop by either Little or Mellow Yellow, which are only a few blocks away, and get into the mood for some Grateful Dead music, with a bit of herbal assistance…

Cosmic Finger have only been around since their formation in early 2008, but they are quickly becoming a hot ticket for jamband fans and Deadheads in Europe, probably logging the most shows yearly of any of the “homegrown” European jambands. They have already played several important festivals here, including Germany’s biggest Hippie Festival “Burg Herzberg Festival” and the “Fehmarn Jimi Hendrix Open Air”. This year, not only will they be opening for moe. at their post JitD show in Hamburg (Fabrik,March 22nd) - but they have been invited to play this summer at two of the most well known annual European Deadhead gatherings, the “Summer of Love Party” (SOL) in Hawkhurst, England and “Playing in the Band” in Plauen, in southern Germany, as well as their just announced addition to the Woodstock Forever Festival, also in Germany.

Although this five piece band has built its reputation on faithful renditions of classic tunes from the Grateful Dead songbook, their new lineup has allowed the group to explore their inner “jamband” and along with heavy improvisation on well known songs, they have been steadily incorporating original music into their sets, and the audience in Amsterdam can expect the performance of some brand new originals during their “Pre Jam in the Dam Special” show…

In short, a dose of lively music in an intimate club setting and an opportunity to warm up for the “Jam in the Dam Festival” and party with some of the local crowd. Be advised that the venue is quite small, so if you are planning to come you should definitely reserve tickets as soon as possible by sending an email to f.m.agency@gmx.net with full name and number of tickets.

“Pre Jam in the Dam Special” Vol. II – further information:

Date: March 13th 2012, Doors: 9:00 pm (Music Bar), Show: 11:00 pm (Music Room)
Venue: Maloe Melo Club, Lijnbaansgracht 163, 1016 VX Amsterdam (Netherlands)
Tickets: 10,00 Euro Reservations: f.m.agency@gmx.net

NEW COSMIC FINGER LIVE RELEASE

Cosmic Finger has just released a live recording of their September 9th 2011 show at the Fabrik. For the moment, it's only available at the merchandise table at Cosmic Finger shows, so don't forget to pick up a copy at your next CF show. You'll want this one, even if you weren't there yourself.

However, they will also be playing a pre-JitD show in Amsterdam (venue TBA) as well as opening for moe. at the Fabrik in Hamburg on march 22nd. Recently they have working some originals into their sets, so hoping to see more of that in the future.

THIS JUST IN ...

The annual Uk deadhead gathering SOL fest has jsut confirmed dates for summer 2012. The two day event will be held on Friday July 6 and Saturday July 7th 2012.

This year's german deadhead NYE celebration has also just been confirmed in Hamburg. The band will be Tumbleweed, who also made an appearance at this summer's PITB.

Finally, the rumour mill suggests that Cosmic Finger will be playing a repeat of last year's pre-JITD party in Amsterdam. Venue has not been confirmed yet, but if you're going to JITD you should definitely try and arrive a day earlier.

SPIN DOCTORS BACK IN EUROPE JANUARY 2012

STEVE KIMOCK & BILLY GOODMAN DATES IN THE U.S.

Germany's resident artist Billy Goodman will be joining his friend Steve Kimock for a show on September 23rd at Godfrey Daniels, in Bethelehem PA, back where this fantastic duo traces its roots from the time when Steve played in The Goodman Brothers. Fans of Billy and Steve in Germany have had various opportunities to see them live at intimate clubs here in Europe, but I guess it's now time to share the music with jamband fans back in the states. Looking forward to more transatlantic collaborations in the future.

COSMIC FINGER TO OPEN FOR MOE

Congratulations are in order for our german friends Cosmic Finger. Germnay's preeminent dead tribute band (although we are looking forward to hearing some of their originals as well) has nabbed a slot to open for MOE. at their March 22nd, 2012 show at Hamburg's Fabrik. Obviously, the stealth show which Cosmic Finger played before Warren Haynes concert this summer seems to have paid off, suitably impressing the promoters, and voila!

DEADICACE at La Fete de La Musique en Auvers-Sur-Oise Tuesday June 21st

40 years after the Grateful Dead were scheduled to play, France's preeminent GD cover band finally made the gig!

As Grateful Dead fans will know, the band was originally scheduled to play the festival during a tour of Europe, the show was cancelled and instead gave way to the improved house party at Chateau d'Herouville. Well here's a chance to experience the concert that never was!

KIMOCK IN EUROPE

Steve Kimock apparently has plans to play some shows here at the beginning of the summer, mostly in Germany and Switzerland. Dates to be announced.

PHIL LESH'S TERRAPIN LANDING

Not to be outdone by musical partner Bob Weir's recent announcement of TRI Studios, and with more than a nod to the Midnight Rambles hosted by Levon Helm at his barn in Woodstock, NY, Phil Lesh has revealed plans to develop a live performance space in Marin County to be called "Terrapin Landing" , as a musical home for Phil Lesh & Friends, host of "west coast rambles" and a variety of other events.

PHISH ANNOUNCES SUPER BALL IX

AT WATKINS GLEN

After months of rumors, the Phish festival at Watkins Glen over July 4th weekend has finally been confirmed. This will mark only the second time a concert festival has been held at the race track, and comes 38 years after Summer Jam at which The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers, and The Band performed.

BOB WEIR'S FLYING SAUCER

GD alum Bob Weir has announced the creation of his new "virtual venue". Originally conceived as a recording studio, Tri Studios has grown into something which Bob describes simply as a "flying saucer". State of the art technology makes it possible to broadcast HD video over the web of concerts recorded in an intimate setting. could this be the end of bands touring?

Check it out yourself at www.tristudios.com

There's a nice acoustic version of Black Throated Wind to whet your appetite.

CHARLIE SHEEN ON NEW AOD ALBUM

Obviously we can't announce every single new jamband album release here, and this isn't really news. But we thought you might enjoy this faux Charlie Sheen endorsement of the new Assembly of Dust live release "Found Sound"

Dear Assembly of Dust Fans-

You can't focus on things that matter if all you've been is asleep for ten years. Funny how sleep rhymes with sheep. You know. But you're not sheep, you're on this email list so you can't be. So from their big beautiful warlock brain, Assembly of Dust introduces you to Found Sound, their newest album. I'm here to tell you that you're either in their corner, or you're with the trolls - so buy one. Look, they're not going to be on MTV or the cover of Rolling Stone, but those avenues are for fools and trolls and soft targets. Just strafing runs in my underwear before I enjoy my first cup of coffee. We're on a drug (several in fact), and it's called AOD. Those other types of bands will criticize what AOD does, but I don't have time for their judgment and their stupidity and you know they lay down with their awful music in front of their ugly fans and look at their loser lives and then they look at AOD and they say, 'I can't process it' well, no, you never will, stop trying, just sit back and enjoy the show. You know? AOD have magic in their fingertips, they're freaking rock stars from mars, banging rocks, that's how they roll. Practice? Come on, this is REAL, it's LIVE man. They're winning! Anyway, remember, this album is for you. Because long ago you showed your tiger-blood, your Adonis DNA, and for that I thank you, THEY thank you. So enjoy the new album and thanks in advance for knowing I'm right. The band will see you on the road in March, but for now, they're just going to hang out with their smoking hot women and fly in private jets over your town. It might be lonely up there, but they're going to love the view.

So goodbye, you know, there's the door, same one from when you came in. Oh but buy a freakin' album before you go and don't miss my contradictory Live Nation tour coming this spring.

NEW CD RELEASE FROM BARRY "THE FISH" MELTON & JAMSUTRA

REVOLUTION DOWN THE ROAD

Barry ‘The Fish’ Melton, guitarist and co-founder of the legendary San Francisco Bay Area duo and band, “Country Joe and the Fish,” together with renowned Parisian guitarist Stephan Missri, are pleased to announce the release of “Revolution Down the Road,” a bilingual French/English neo-psychedelic music album that also features the spectacular Dutch bassist, Charles Jannic, and well-known French drummer Christophe Rossi, former editor of the French drumming magazine, Batteur.  The new album is released under their collective band name, Jamasutra.

“This was truly a trans-Atlantic effort for me,” says Barry ‘The Fish’ Melton, who flew from San Francisco to Paris and back over the course of three years to work on the project, much of which was recorded  just outside of Paris.  Says Melton, “Much of my early work was influenced by Middle-Eastern music, which becomes immediately apparent were you to see me with County Joe in the 1967 movie, Monterey Pop.  But the opportunity to play with a gifted guitarist like Stephan Missri, who was born in Algeria when it was still part of France, presented us with a unique opportunity to meld our styles across the hands of time into a unified blend of contemporary sound.”

The new Jamasutra album also includes the strong influence of Stephan Missri’s unique lyrics and vocal style, in both French and English, which give the music a unique fluency.  And Melton contributes to the lyrical fabric of the album with a call to arms regarding the current state of the world’s ecosystem – in English – with an adaptation of the traditional song, Shady Grove, exhorting the listener to take action to save the planet (and provides the foundation for the album’s title, “Revolution Down the Road.”)

The supporting cast of the album includes a virtual who’s who of French neo-psychedelic music, including Eric Cougrand, Jean-Michel Laugier and Alexandre Manconi, together with the unique and powerful post-production mixing skills of Xavier Dorémus.  And those who obtain a physical copy of the CD will be treated to the very special art of Yves Courson that graces not only the album cover, but the disc itself.

If you’ve been longing for an album that brings the essence of psychedelic music into the present-day, Jamasutra’s “Revolution Down the Road” recaptures the spirit of a magical time and brings it into the present day.

GRATEFUL GAME

A new Grateful Dead themed video game is slated for release in august 2011

“Grateful Dead has always looked for inventive ways to embrace new technology,” says David Lemieux, legacy manager for Grateful Dead. ”We’ve found a great partner in Curious Sense. They are lifelong Dead Heads who have some brilliant plans to take our fans on a very cool journey. We can’t wait for everyone to check out the fun new toys we are building.”

FREE DISPATCH

Jampop band Dispatch has apparently reunited, will be touring and even going into the studio. Being the media savvy guys that they are, they are obviously looking to create a buzz for their newest efforts, which is good news for us. The band is giving away free digital downloads of 4 of thier studio albums at www.dispatchmusic.com The only caveat is you have to sign up to follow them on twitter, like them on facebook, and email five friends. (all of which for some people may require first getting a twitter or facebook account and figuring out how it works). If that all sounds like too much hassle, you can check out a 5 song sampler at www.dispatchmusic.com/sampler and decide for yourself if its worth the trouble.

TOUR VAN STOLEN IN ITALY

The Tour van for A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS was stolen outside a show in Italy, with all their cash, merchandise, passports, etc. inside. The band is accepting donations at their website www.aplaceto burystrangers.com to help them overcome this major setback.

No wonder everyone is cancelling their shows here in Europe.

MORE CANCELLATIONS

FISTFUL OF MERCY have cancelled shows in Germany and Brussels due to "unforeseen personal commitments".

DRIVE BY TRUCKERS CANCELS REMAINING EUROPEAN DATES

DTB has been forced to cancel their remaining dates in Europe due to overall band sickness and the collapse of one band member from "exhaustion and dehydration."

JUNGLE JAM

For those of you who didn't get tickets to JamCruise or Mayan Holidayz (that would be most of us over here), are completely bummed that Jam In The Dam has been postponed until 2012, and are still looking for a way to take advantage of the strong Euro.... Unsung heroes of east coast jamband music, Max Creek, are celebrating their 40th anniversary with a tropical outing. VIP packages include a private adventure with the band and soundboards delivered nightly to your hotel room. Also word has it that a certain drummer, who has played with Scott before and was a member of another group you might have heard of, will be sitting in one night for what is billed as Bill's Creek.

MY FIRST GRATEFUL DEAD SHOW / INTERNATIONAL EDITION

On November 17th at 9 PM (U.S. East Coast Time) there will be a streaming / listening party of an "international edition" of My First Grateful Dead Show at www.deadvids.com The program consists of a grateful dead show streamed in its entirety with commentary from a guest host, in this case it is a deadhead from overseas (my guess is Europe), who talks about his or her first dead show experience. It's also possible to login and particpate in the chatroom.

DAYTROTTER

Ok, so this isn't really news, per se. In fact, the only news is that we were completely unaware of this site.

www.daytrotter.com

The concept behind this website is just so insanely cool we had to share it with you. It's a music studio that invites up and coming artists, many without even a recording contract yet, and puts them in the studio for a day to cut 4 tracks. All tracks are "studio live" so they may be a bit rough, but hey that's what we like. Then they post the songs on the website for free MP3 downloads. Not all the bands are necessarily "Jam Bands", but there's some excellent music available. In particular, check out Truth & Salvage Co., Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Mother Hips or Jackie Greene.
